Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
